What led to the shift of power away from Rome, the seat of the Catholic Church

After the Protestant Reformation, the Catholic Church felt the blow on the confidence in the church. The Protestants criticized many practiced the Catholics had like the distance the church held from the bible and the constant corruption by many popes who protected some powerful families. Even though the Catholic Church tried to make the counter-reform, many people left it for others.

Because of that power started to shift away from the Church and many countries had anti-church policies.
