Put them into fractions:

[tex] \frac{1}{4} [/tex] · [tex] \frac{4}{1} [/tex] = [tex] \frac{4}{4} [/tex] = 1

because 4 is split up into 4 parts. each of those parts is 1/4. 1/4+1/4+1/4+1/4 equals 4 because there are 4 1/4s
