ATP is hydrolyzed, or broken down in the presence of water. The bond being broken is one with a phosphate group. This causes the loss of one phosphate group from the molecule and production of adenosine diphosphate. Therefore, ATP typically breaks apart into ADP and phosphate.
ATP + water → ADP + phosphate + energy
