D, compound; It couldn't be a mixture because the elements involved in water are chemically combined, not physically. Cannot be a solute, it is not for example salt being dissolved in water, water would be the solvent. Down to these two choices from what I remember in 8th grade, water is an example of a compound because it is chemically combined and cannot be merely separated like a bowl of different rocks.
