The volume increases at a faster rate than the surface area.

Imagine a cube measured 1cm x 1cm x 1cm. It had a volume of 1 cm cubed and a surface area of 6 cm squared. That's 1:6.

A cube mesauring 2cm x 2cm x 2cm has a volume of 8 cm cubed and a surface area of 24 cm squared. Thats 1:3.

The less surface area, the less it can absorb.
The more volume, the longer it takes to move the nutrients around inside of the cell.

I hope this helped you.
